When you make contact with an assembly either as a stranger making inquiry directly or because you have been recruited there will be someone who becomes your primary contact, and thereby becomes your sponsor.  

Your sponsor will introduce you to others and will help make sure that you know the membership process adopted by the particular assembly.

Prior to actually gaining membership you will gain a second sponsor.  These two people are the friends who will recommend you to the others in the assembly.
